For many families in the New York City area, summer camp offers something children cannot always experience during the school year. Time outdoors. New friendships. The chance to grow in confidence while trying new things.
At Camp Lakota, summer days are filled with lake swims, laughter, and the kind of moments that turn into lifelong memories.
Located in the Catskill Mountains of upstate New York, Camp Lakota has welcomed campers from New York City and the surrounding region for generations. Families from Manhattan, Brooklyn, Queens, Westchester, Long Island, and northern New Jersey choose Lakota because it offers the perfect balance. Close enough to reach easily from the city, yet surrounded by forests, lakes, and open space where kids can truly experience camp life.
For many campers, Lakota quickly becomes more than just a place to spend the summer. It becomes a place where they feel comfortable, supported, and excited to return year after year.
For kids growing up in a busy city, sleepaway camp offers something different. A chance to unplug, explore, and spend their days surrounded by nature and friends.
At Camp Lakota, campers spend their days trying new activities, cheering each other on, and building friendships that often last well beyond the summer.
Some campers love the lake. Others discover a passion for sports, creative arts, horseback riding, or outdoor adventures. What matters most is that every camper is encouraged to try new things in a supportive environment where counselors guide and cheer them on every step of the way.
Parents often tell us that what makes Lakota special is the sense of community. Campers quickly feel welcomed, included, and part of something bigger than themselves.
That feeling of belonging is one of the reasons so many campers return summer after summer.
Camp Lakota is located in the Catskill Mountains of upstate New York, making it an easy trip for families across the New York metropolitan area.
Typical travel times include New York City at about two hours, Westchester County about ninety minutes, northern New Jersey about ninety minutes, Long Island about two and a half hours, and southern Connecticut about two hours.
All campers coming from the NYC/Long Island/NJ area are required to take the bus. We don’t do parent drop-off on opening day. But it’s an easy drive for people coming up for tours.
The short distance from the city allows campers to feel fully immersed in camp life while still being within comfortable reach for families.
Every day at Camp Lakota brings new experiences, new challenges, and plenty of fun.
Mornings might start with time on the lake, where campers swim, boat, or try watersports with friends. Later in the day, campers rotate through activities that may include athletics, outdoor adventure, creative arts, or skill-based programs like archery.
Throughout the day, campers are encouraged to try new activities while continuing to develop skills in the ones they love most.
Evenings are often when some of the most memorable moments happen. Camp-wide games, special events, campfires, and time spent with cabin groups create the friendships and traditions that campers remember long after summer ends.
These shared experiences are what turn camp into a place campers look forward to returning to every year.
For many families, choosing the right sleepaway camp is also about finding the right distance from home.
A camp that is too far away can make travel complicated. A camp that is too close may not provide the independence and adventure that make sleepaway camp special.
Camp Lakota offers a balance that many families appreciate. Located in the Catskills, it is close enough to reach easily from the city, yet far enough away that campers can fully experience the freedom, friendships, and outdoor adventure that make camp unforgettable.
This balance has made Lakota a favorite choice for families across the New York metropolitan area.
