Summer Camp Near Westchester County NY

For many families in Westchester County, summer camp is one of the most meaningful experiences a child can have. It is a chance to spend time outdoors, build confidence, make new friends, and discover new interests in a supportive environment.

At Camp Lakota, summer days are filled with lake swims, laughter, and the kind of moments that turn into lifelong memories.

Located in the Catskill Mountains of upstate New York, Camp Lakota has welcomed campers from Westchester County and the greater New York region for generations. Families from communities such as Scarsdale, White Plains, Rye, Chappaqua, and Bedford choose Lakota because it offers the perfect balance. It is close enough to reach easily from Westchester, yet far enough away that campers can fully experience nature, independence, and traditional sleepaway camp life.

For many campers, Lakota quickly becomes more than just a place to spend the summer. It becomes a place where they feel comfortable, supported, and excited to return year after year.

Why Westchester Families Choose Sleepaway Camp

Children growing up in Westchester often have access to excellent schools, sports, and activities during the school year. Sleepaway camp offers something different. It provides the chance to unplug from daily routines and spend time outdoors while forming friendships and building independence.

At Camp Lakota, campers are encouraged to try new activities, support one another, and grow in confidence. Whether they are learning a new skill, competing on a team, or simply spending time with cabin mates, campers are constantly discovering new things about themselves.

Some campers fall in love with the lake. Others discover passions in athletics, creative arts, outdoor adventure, or horseback riding. The variety of activities helps every camper find something they enjoy while continuing to explore new interests.

Parents often tell us that what makes Lakota special is the strong sense of community. Campers quickly feel welcomed and included, and friendships form naturally through shared experiences throughout the summer.

Getting to Camp From Westchester County

One reason many Westchester families choose Camp Lakota is how easy it is to reach from the area.

Camp Lakota is located in the Catskill Mountains, typically about a 90 minute to two hour drive from much of Westchester County depending on location and traffic.

All campers coming from the NYC/Long Island/NJ area are required to take the bus. We don’t do parent drop-off on opening day. But it’s an easy drive for people coming up for tours. Learn more on our Bus to Camp page.

A Day at Camp Lakota

Every day at Camp Lakota is designed to balance fun, exploration, and personal growth.

Mornings often begin with activities on the lake, where campers swim, boat, or enjoy time on the waterfront with friends. Later in the day, campers rotate through activities that may include athletics, outdoor adventure, creative arts, or skill based programs like archery.

Throughout the day, campers are encouraged to try new things while continuing to develop skills in the activities they enjoy most. Explore what campers can do on our Activities page.

Evenings are often when some of the most memorable moments happen. Camp wide games, special events, campfires, and time with cabin groups create the traditions and friendships that campers remember long after summer ends. For a closer look at the rhythm of camp, visit A Day at Camp.
